Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Compounding Pharmacy?
A compounding pharmacy is a speciality pharmacy that can manufacture customised medication by combining, mixing, or altering medication and other ingredients. Compounding pharmacists create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. This is done by using specialised equipment, and sourcing unique ingredients.
Why do some people need compounded medications?
People may need a compounding pharmacy as their doctor has prescribed a medication that pharmaceutical manufacturers do not make. Practitioners in hospitals, clinics, and other health care facilities sometimes provide scripts for compounded drugs to patients when a TGA- approved drug is not medically appropriate to treat them. These include patients who have an allergy to a certain dyes, gluten, lactose or preservatives and need a medication to be made without it. Another example may be prescribers who would like more than one selected medicine in a preparation. Get in touch to see how compounded medication may suit you.
